Matsoukas fought against the Nazis in Greece during World War Two. But his soul is too great for the life he now leads twenty years later in the Greek neighborhoods of the south side of Chicago. His marriage is in a shambles, his counseling service is in decline, his son is terminally ill. Worst of all, his mother-in-law from Greece has just moved in.

A romantic at heart, Matsoukas believes the warmth of the Greek isles can cure his dying son. He struggles against family, friends, fate and himself to take his son to the magical land that Matsoukas once knew.
